Gandhi Bazaar Shivamogga Since 2013

Where Shivamogga comes for silk.

Kanchipuram, Mysore and Banarasi silks, hand-picked for weddings, festivals and the days in between. See them at Siddoji Rao Complex, or ask on WhatsApp for what arrived this week.

Open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 8 pm

The collection

Six ways to wear silk, and the sarees for each.

Every saree on the shelf was chosen by the family that runs the shop. Nothing arrives by the carton. Tell us the occasion and we bring out the right rack.

01

Kanchipuram silk

Heavy pure-zari borders, temple and checks patterns, a contrast pallu that catches the light from across the hall. The saree for the muhurtham.

02

Mysore & soft silks

Light, buttery crepe silks with slim zari lines. They sit close, fold small and stay comfortable through a long function.

03

Banarasi

Brocade florals, jangla and jaal on silk. Made for receptions and festive evenings when the lights are low and the saree should not be.

Bridal

Muhurtham sarees matched to the family's colours, with blouse fabric chosen while the saree is still on you. Bring the mother, bring the aunts.

Festive & evening

Lighter silks and designer drapes for Dasara, Deepavali, Varamahalakshmi and the dinners in between. Rich, without the weight.

Everyday

Cottons, cotton-silks and printed sarees that go to work, to the temple and to the Saturday market, and come home still comfortable.

And more on the shelf

Didn't see what you need? It's probably in the back.

Fancy sarees, georgettes, Dharmavaram, Ilkal, Gadwal, and fashion cotton wear for the kids so the whole family dresses from one shop. Ask, and we'll send a photo.

Know your silk

Pure silk tells on itself, if you know where to look.

We would rather you walk in knowing what to check than take our word for it. Four things worth checking on any silk saree, here or anywhere.

Ask a silk question

i

The zari has a red heart

Real zari is silk thread wrapped in silver and plated with gold. Scrape a loose end with a fingernail and a fine red or orange silk core shows underneath. Tested zari stays bright for decades; imitation zari dulls within a few washes.

ii

Weight is a kind of honesty

A Kanchipuram with pure zari sits heavy in the hand because there is metal in the border. A soft silk should pour like water. If a "heavy" saree feels light, ask what the border is made of.

Judge colour in daylight

Silk shifts under tube-light; a deep arakku can read almost brown indoors and glow red outside. Carry your shortlist to the door before you decide. We will not mind.

Fold it on a new line

Dry clean only. Store wrapped in soft cotton, never plastic, and refold along a fresh line every few months so the zari never cracks on a crease. A good silk saree outlives the occasion it was bought for.

Occasions

Tell us the day. We'll find the saree.

01

Weddings

Muhurtham, reception, the morning after, the two families' sarees that must not clash. Come with the dates and the colour the groom's side has picked. We keep notes.

02

Festivals

Dasara in Shivamogga, Deepavali, Ugadi, Varamahalakshmi, Ganesha habba. New stock lands before each one. Ask on WhatsApp the week before and we'll send what's fresh.

03

Gifting

A saree for Amma, for Atte, for the bride's sister who did all the work. Tell us who it is for and roughly what they wear; we'll send three options to choose from, with prices.

Every day

Office, temple, school functions, the market. Cottons and cotton-silks that wash well and still look like you tried. The rack by the window, usually.

Your visit

What happens when you walk in.

No cart, no checkout page. Silk is bought by hand and eye, so the shop is built for that. Here is how an hour with us usually goes.

  1. 1

Tell us the occasion, and a number

A budget is not awkward here; it is useful. It tells us which rack to open first, and which to leave closed.

  2. 2

Sit. The sarees come to you

Border first, then the pallu, then the body opened across the counter so you see how the colour moves. One after another, until something stops you.

  3. 3

Drape it, then pick the blouse

A saree looks different on a shoulder than on a shelf. Try it, and match the blouse fabric while it is on you so nothing clashes later.

  4. 4

    Decide in your own time

Take a photo in daylight, send it to the family, come back tomorrow. Nobody will follow you to the door.
